89193-8521 B -- RESOURCE RECOVERY, REUTILIZATION, RECYCLING (R3) OF SHILLELAGH
TACTUCAL MISSILE SOL 30-MLB-98 DUE 121897 POC Michael Brubaker --
702-295-7606 RFI: Resource Recovery, Reutilization, and Recycling (R3)
of Shillelagh Tactical Missile System Components As a portion of the
Joint Demilitarization Technology Program, the U.S. Department of
Defense (DOD) is identifying resource recovery, reutilization, and
recycling (R3) opportunities for the Shillelagh tactical missile
system. An objective of the DOD Joint Ordnance Commanders Group
Munitions Demilitarization Subgroup is to pursue R3 whenever possible
and economically practical. The components of the Shillelagh and other
tactical missile systems suitable for R3 opportunities include: (1)
the warhead system and the metal carcass, and (2) the balance of the
system, including the electronic circuitry containing precious metals,
and the expended carcasses (shell casings) comprised of metal alloys.
For the Shillelagh system, the warhead system contains approximately
8 pounds of Octol (75% HMX and 25% TNT), the electronic circuitry
contains gold and silver, and the expended carcasses (shell casings)
consist of about 24 lbs. of aluminum, high temperature steel, and
magnesium. The expended carcasses contain some surface lead
contamination. The electronic circuitry assemblies may be available
soon, with the expended carcasses becoming available in the future.
Currently, there are approximately 30,000 Shillelagh systems available
for R3 opportunities. The DOD is seeking companies interested in
participating in this R3 effort. Under the new Senate Bill S.936, Sec
365, parties interested in purchasing the warhead system shall be a
licensed manufacturer (as defined in section 921(10) of title 18) that
has a capability to modify, reclaim, transport, and either store or
sell the ammunition or ammunition components purchased. Interested
parties may contact M. W. Brubaker, Bechtel Nevada Corporation @
702-295-7606 or brubakml@gwsmtp.egg.nv.doe.gov. The response deadline
is September 18,1997 . (0247) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0015 19970909\B-0008.SOL)
