(301) 227-3332 The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) (under
authority granted by Federal Technology Transfer Act of the 1986
(FTTA); Executive Order 12591, Facilitating Access to Science and
Technology; DoD 3200.12-R-4 of 27 Dec 88, Domestic Technology Transfer
Program Regulation), is interested in forming partnerships with
commercial digital color printing manufacturers for mutual benefits.
NIMA is interested in the commercial development of a large format
direct-to-paper digital color printing system to fulfill the tremendous
demand for large format personalized digital color printing NIMA,
having performed significant research, development, testing and
evaluation in large format digital color print technologies, will
consider entering into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement
(CRADA) with commercial developers to produce a production system with
the following capabilities. a. Provide the ability for high speed
production of multi-color hardcopy paper maps and charts without the
use of film, printing plates and press make-readies. We are interested
in the capability to generate a printed area of 24" x 29" or larger.
b. Match the ink colors displayed in some Department of Defense (DoD)
standard specifications. c. Demonstrate a seamless interface with
existing color electronic systems, including those at NIMA, St. Louis.
All other details, including public release of findings, will be
determined during the CRADA drafting process. NIMA has substantial
experience and history in the production of hardcopy products. Areas of
interest that could be shared under a CRADA agreement are: a. A
substantial store of knowledge and experience at NIMA in utilizing and
integrating a computer-to-plate system with full color electronic
publishing capabilities for the purpose of replicating large size
multicolor maps that are generated from digital files. b. Experience in
the production of direct digital multicolor proofs. c. Knowledge and
experience with the repurposing of large digital files in order to
accommodate different file formats. d. NIMA has additional capabilities
and facilities that may be offered during the negotiation process.
Companies interested in pursuing such CRADA's are requested to submit
a letter not to exceed five pages in length, by 29 September 1997,
describing the company's capabilities and what benefits both the
company and NIMA might reasonably expect to derive from such an
arrangement. This information should be sent to Larry W. David, Project
