80401-3393 A -- LICENSING AGREEMENT FOR ENCAPSULATING MATERIALS FOR PHOTOVOLTAIC
DEVICES SOL DW-120 POC Ken Touryan (303) 275-3009 WEB: NREL Business
Venture Center, http://www.nrel.gov/businessventures/lic.html. On
behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory (NREL) anticipates negotiating one or more license
agreements with U.S. companies interested in commercializing
encapsulating materials for photovoltaic devices. Researchers at NREL
have developed a substantially clear and colorless encapsulating
material for photovoltaic devices that remain clear and colorless for
a long lifetime. The new materials protectively encapsulates operating
photovoltaic devices while retaining light transmittal properties
necessary for efficient device operation. The new NREL encapsulating
material includes polymer and curing agent components plus primer,
ultraviolet-light stabilizer, and anti-oxidant additives. It can also
be applied in situations where long-lifetime, clear-coating is
essential. Unlike the extensive previous efforts to modify existing
ethylene-vinyl acetate formulations, the NREL encapsulant is
substantially free of ultraviolet light absorbers. Although always
included in previous compositions to convert ultraviolet light energy
to heat energy, ultraviolet light absorbers have been found to
decompose photochemically, leading to browning of the encapsulant and
interference with light transmittal. Contact NREL Business Ventures
