Assistant, 301 903-0569 17. The Department of Energy invites small
businesses (500 employees or less) to submit grant applications in
response to its fifth annual STTR program solicitation to be issued on
October 1, 1997. In the STTR program, small business applicants must
collaborate with a non-profit research institution, such as a
university or National laboratory. A copy of the STTR solicitation may
be obtained by writing to the STTR Program Manager, ER-32, U.S.
Department of Energy, 19901 Germantown Road, Germantown, MD 20874, by
telephoning (301) 903-5707, or by accessing the World Wide Web at
http://sttr.er.doe.gov/sttr. The STTR program solicitation is for the
following technical topics: 1) Atmospheric Measurement Technologies, 2)
Fuel Cell Catalysts and Ultracapacitors for Advanced Transportation
Applications, 3) Carbon Management, 4) Fusion Technology, and 5) Low
Cost Field Portable Chemical Analysis Systems. Successful applicants
(about 15-20) may receive up to $100,000 for a grant period of about
nine months to develop the feasibility of the idea, with up to $500,000
available in a second phase for those ideas with the highest potential
to meet the STTR program objectives. The closing date for this
solicitation is December 15, 1997. Specific questions regarding this

and telephone number. Please note that STTR was created as a pilot
program which ended in fiscal year 1997. Although the STTR program has
not yet been reauthorized by the Congress, the solicitation is being
issued with the expectation that reauthorization will be forthcoming.
