A -- PROCUREMENT OF LONG LEAD ITEM -- SDIO84-89-C-0003 SOL SDIO84-89-C-0003 POC POC: Ms. Anne McFarlane, (703) 604-4540, CBD Reference Number: 98-01 The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO), Directed Energy Directorate (BMDO/TOD) plans to issue a sole source contract modification to Lockheed Martin Astronautics, for procurement of long lead material under the Zenith Star High Energy Laser (HEL) contract SDIO84-89-C-0003. The purpose of the procurement is to purchase an Ultra Low Expansion (ULE) blank as long lead material for a four meter monolithic HEL Mirror. ULE glass, because of its ultra low expansion coefficient, is required to fabricate a HEL primary mirror. Lockheed Martin has established the specification for the primary mirror and will acquire the ULE blank from Corning Glass Works, Corning, NY, the sole manufacturer of the ULE blank. Corning will be a subcontractor to Lockheed Martin for this material, and Lockheed Martin will inspect the ULE blank upon delivery from Corning to ensure compliance with the specifications. Award of the modification to acquire this long lead material under contract SDIO84-89-C-0003 will be made pursuant to 10 USC. 2304(c)(1), only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements.
