hereby soliciting information for potential sources for The NASA Lewis
Research Center (LeRC) plans to issue a draft Statement of Work for
industry comments in November, 1997 for Contractor APU hardware design,
development and testing. NASA Lewis Research Center is pursuing
advanced technology development of turbomachinery-based auxiliary power
units for use on the Space Shuttle Orbiter. A significant objective of
this effort is in enabling the use of non-toxic fuels, specifically
ethanol and liquid oxygen. The work encompasses a wide range of
technologies including combustors, cryogenic heat exchangers, turbines,
gearboxes, electrical generators, and control systems. The scope will
cover analytical and experimental investigations, and design efforts.
The deliverables will include analyses, design, fabrication and testing
of sub-components, components and controls, as well as a prototype APU
system. The prototype APU system shall demonstrate the most critical
sub-system technologies in a ground test. Existing Shuttle APU hardware
may be provided by NASA as a base for prototype demonstration. Contract
performance is anticipated to begin in February, 1998 and end in
September, 1999. The draft SOW will be followed by a RFO in January,
1998. The RFO is contingent upon receipt of funding. A single, cost
reimbursable-type contract award is contemplated. Interested parties
should respond with information demonstrating their ability and
qualifications to provide the required services by November 15, 1997.
