Environmental Technology Developers may want to take advantage of the following opportunity: The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) have entered into a partnership to conduct verifications under U.S. EPA's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program. Companies and/or developers with innovative technologies in the hazardous waste pollution prevention, recycling, and treatment areas are encouraged to participate in a national performance verification program. If your environmental technology is commercially ready or at a sufficient scale and state of development such that performance claims can be established and evaluated, this program may be of interest to you. Of particular interest to the ETV Program are hazardous waste pollution prevention technologies. [Pollution prevention is defined as source reduction: any practice that eliminates or reduces the amount or toxicity of a hazardous pollutant prior to generation, includinginput, production process, and product changes. Examples include products with longer lifetimes or less environmental impact; improved production equipment; and less-toxic input materials.] In addition to pollution prevention, treatment and recycling technologies are also welcome. Though not limited to the following, technologies used in these industrial sectors will be given priority: computer and electronic manufacturing, metal plating/finishing, petroleum refining, printing, automobile manufacturing, and iron and steel making. Technologies must be near or already at full-scale operation, exhibit technical success, and show existing or potential market acceptance. Developers with technologies meeting these criteria are encouraged to apply. For those technologies selected, Cal/EPA's Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and U.S. EPA, in consultation with the applicant, will establish criteria for evaluating the technology. If field testing is required, the cost will be the responsibility of the applicant although the cost of DTSC review may be offset by as much as 55% by U.S. EPA funding. DTSC and U.S. EPA will review and approve test plans and will review the result of field tests in conjunction with other technical information submitted by the applicant. Cal/EPA and U.S. EPA verification and Cal/EPA certification decisions will be accompanied by a technology evaluation report. A verification by U.S. EPA and certification by Cal/EPA, will provide potential customers and regulators alike with an independent assessment of your technology's performance. This assessment may be used to assist in marketing. Information regarding verified/certified technologies (such as fact sheets and evaluation reports) will be distributed by Cal/EPA and U.S. EPA, including distribution via the Agencies' internet web sites.
