Transportation System Center (Volpe Center) is seeking manufacture
information regarding the potential of the pulper processing technology
to treat and dispose of shipboard sold waste(trash) in compliance with
MARPOL 73/78 and the Clean Water Act. The Volpe Center is interested
in pulper equipment waste handling capabilities, processing rates,
installation (weight, space and power) requirements, marine environment
compatibility, maintenance requirements, and cost information. The
potential application is for use onboard U.S. Coast Guard cutters and
includes the high-endurance cutters (WHEC), medium-endurance cutters
(WMEC), seagoing buoy tenders (WLB), and icebreakers (WAGB). The crew
sizes on these vessels range from 40 personnel on a typical WLB to 182
personnel on a WAGB and are estimated to generate from 100 to 700
total pounds of trash per day. The Volpe Center will be developing a
technology assessment report for the U.S. Coast Guard. Submittals
