Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) is
seeking qualified vendors to provide a seeing monitor for use at the
Gemini Observatory, Cerro Pachon, Chile. The seeing monitor will
consist of a small robotic 14-16 inch aperture telescope, associated
mount, drive/tracking electronics, fully retractable enclosure, support
computer, and integral Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM). Over
the course of a night the system must be able to automatically acquire
stars and output to a remote computer measurements of the local
seeing, in the form of the Fried parameter (r0) or similar seeing
diagnostic. Automatic measurements of other atmospheric properties
including the Greenwood frequency and nightly extinction coefficients
are desirable goals of the system, but are not required as part of the
baseline design. The Gemini 8m Telescopes Project is an international
collaboration to build two 8 meter telescopes, one to be located on
Mauna Kea in Hawaii, the other to be located on Cerro Pachon in Chile.
The Gemini project partners include the USA, United Kingdom, Canada,
Argentina, Brazil and Chile. The Gemini project is operated by the
Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA)
under contract to the National Science Foundation. Companies who are
interested in receiving the Request for Proposal for this procurement
should send a letter of interest by 1 December, 1997, to the following
