Medicine to procure on a sole source basis with Abigail Porter, 2900
Connecticut Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008 for exhibit services
covering the period of performance 11/28/97 through 09/30/98 for the
following service: Breath of Life, the exhibition and tentatively
scheduled film program will, in addition to highlighting the History of
Medicine's collection, will seek to provoke visitors to think about
science and medicine past, present, and future. The exhibition will use
biographies of famous people who had asthma as a key element to explore
the theme of how individuals overcome a chronic and sometimes deadly
disease to achieve great things and how scientists change our
understanding of a disease and develop new treatments. The development
of Breath of Life includes four phases: Concept Development, Design
Development, Specifications, Fabrication and Installation. Concept
Development: Open round table discussions about the social and
scientific history of the disease and the biographies. The consulting
committee will include representatives from key Institutes, visiting
curators, exhibition program consultants, designer, and HMD staff.
Develop an exhibition outline and preliminary floor plan. Design
Development: Develop the scholarship of the exhibition. Research and
acquire objects and images. Develop preliminary designs. Write draft
exhibition script. Specifications: Finalize exhibition fabrication
package and solicit bids. Fabrication and Installation: Build and
install the exhibition. Exhibition researcher will provide:
Intellectual support during concept and design development including:
Curatorial research, factual research, fact verification, photo/media
and object negotiation and acquisition. Assist with the negotiation of
rights and fees for photos and media. During Specifications and
Fabrication and Installation: Review and assist finalizing bid package
and coordinate installation. Throughout the project: Assist with
establishing registrarial procedures, arranging for transportation and
conservation of objects. Edit and proofread all exhibition text:
Labels, brochures, catalogue. Individuals interested in responding to
this notice must be able to provide professional service as specified
and listed above. Responses should sufficiently demonstrate the
individual's ability to meet the government's requirements. This is not
a request for quotations, however, all responsible sources may submit
a proposal which will be considered by the National Library of
Medicine. Responses are required within fifteen(15) calendar days from
