Health Services, intends to solicit and negotiate on a sole source
basis with the Department of Oral Biology, School of Dental Medicine,
State University of New York at Buffalo, 3435 Main Street, Room 120
Foster Hall, Buffalo, New York, 14214. The purpose of this project is
to develop a research protocol for and test, through a clinical trial,
one or more efficacious non-surgical treatment regimens for diabetes
related periodontal disease. This is a Phase II clinical trial, with
the intent to improve upon the clinical findings from the previous
work. The clinical trial will focus on the use of antibiotics, both
locally applied and systemically, in the treatment of periodontal
disease in Native Americans with Type 2 Diabetes. This investigation
will assess the effectiveness of several treatment regimens and will be
conducted at two USPHS, Indian Health Service dental clinics in the
Pueblos of Santo Domingo and San Felipe, New Mexico. The period of
performance is 36 months. A Cost-Reimbursement Contract will be
