contract of the second periodic nourishment for the Dade County Shore
Protection Project. The areas to be nourished are located at Surfside
from monuments DNR 31 to DNR 36 (approximately 590,000 cubic yards) and
South Miami Beach from the north jetty at Government Cut for 1,500 feet
(approximately 132,000 cubic yards). The segment at Surfside will be
approximately 5,500 feet long. It will have a 250-foot berm width from
the Erosion Control Line (ECL) at El. 9 MLW with a foreshore slope of
1 vertical on 20 horizontal. The South Miami Beach segment will have
a 180-foot berm width at E1. 14 MLW with a foreshore slope of 1
vertical on 15 horizontal. The borrow area for this project is located
offshore some 15,000 feet southeast of the South Miami Beach segment.
Rocks are present in the borrow area and separation will be necessary.
A rock disposal area is provided for disposing of rocks in excess of 1"
diameter. The rock disposal site is located directly offshore from
Miami Beach about 8,500 feet. Rocks will not be separated from the sand
on the beach. This contract includes the construction of an offshore
artificial reef two miles off the Haulover Beach Park shoreline. The
new reef will lie between two existing reefs. The artificial reef will
be constructed using 314 concrete modules and approximately 8,000 tons
of limerock boulders. The concrete modules must be fabricated according
to the contract drawings. In the case of the limerock boulders, these
must have dimensions in any one dimension between 36" and 72". A
staging area for deployment will be provided on the inlet side of
Haulover Beach Park. Protection of the environment, especially the
existing reef system, is of paramount importance. The Contractor's
operations will have to be carried out in accordance with permit
requirements. It is anticipated that this project may be constructed
during the turtle nesting season and precautions will have to be taken.
Magnitude of construction is between $5,000,000 to $10,000,000.
Invitation DACW17-98-B-0003 will be issued on or about 26 Nov 97 and
opened on or about 13 Jan 98. Cost of Plans and Specifications is
$30.00. Checks should be made payable to FAO USAED Jacksonville, and
sent to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville, Florida. THIS IS AN
