Description: The National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, Division of Kidney, Urologic and Hematologic Diseases (KUH), has a requirement to conduct the National Analgesic Nephropathy (NAN) Study. The objectives of this study are to 1) develop a patient questionnaire and ascertain its usefulness with or without selected other tests and clinical information to diagnose analgesic nephropathy; 2) assess the reliability and validity of the questionnaire; 3)develop criteria for non-enhanced computerized tomography (CT) of the kidney for the diagnosis of analgesic nephropathy; 4)determine the sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of CT as a screening tool to diagnose analgesic nephropathy; and 5) conduct a survey in an appropriately sized sample of incident hemodialysis patients using CT alone or in combination with the questionnaire, other tests, and clinical information to determine the prevalence of analgesic nephropathy. The goal of the survey is to provide an accurate estimate of the prevalence of analgesic nephropathy in the total incident U.S. hemodialysis patient population. The contractor, in collaboration with the NIDDK Program Office, will provide the clinical nephrology, radiological, biostatistical, psychometric, epidemiological, and clinical study management expertise to accomplish the study in three phases. The Request for Proposals, RFP No. NIH-NIDDK-98-03, will be issued on or about December 19, 1997, with a closing date on or about February 24, 1998. Requests for this solicitation must be in writing addressed to the Contracting Officer cited above. All responsible sources may submit a proposal which will be considered by the agency.
