The Corps of Engineers has a need for a construction contract to Construct Left Abutment and Modifications to Upper Guard Wall at Locks and Dam 2, Monongahela River, Pennsylvania. The work consists of modification of approximately 200 feet of existing lock upper guard wall; dredging riverward of the wall; install Government-furnished (PZ 27) sheet piling and special shapes forming a bulkhead wall; construct nineteen (19) 72-inch diameter, permanently cased, reinforced caissons; furnish and install temporary waler system consisting of temporary walers and permanent tie rods; replace lost fill within the existing diaphragm cells using sand-bentonite grout; furnish and place concrete fill (underwater) and structural concrete for new wall cap; furnish and install all required reinforcing steel and joint materials; prepare and modify existing joints; furnish and install miscellaneous metals; and temporary relocation of the electrical cables for the upper guard wall lighting; Modifications to create a hydraulic flow-way through the upper guard wall to include demolishing and removing a portion of the end of upper guard wall, steel fender system, sheet pile diaphragms, concrete wall cap, and other miscellaneous items such as handrail, walkways and grating; removal and storage of existing walkway and polyethylene fenders; refill diaphragm cell with new cell fill material; construct modified wall cap and wall facing; furnish and install new fender frame and new fenders; furnish and install new miscellaneous metals including grating, guard fence, and conduits and painting. New left abutment will be tied-back caisson wall including: construction of 650 foot construction bench along the left bank of river; furnish and place granular bench material and stone protection to armor the embankment; Caisson wall consists of series of interlocking 36-inch diameter, plain concrete, lagging caissons and 60-inch diameter structural reinforced caissons; Work includes drilling lagging and structural caissons from the construction bench; furnish reinforcing and field assembling steel reinforcing cages; furnish and place caisson concrete; miscellaneous work to complete the caisson wall; install Government-furnished (PZ 40 and PS 27.5) sheet piling for cut-off walls; furnish and place rock lining overtop caisson backfill, concrete seal over upstream portion of rock lining; furnish and install inclined rock anchors through all structural caissons; Exploratory drilling; Supply and install integrated instrumentation systems for left and right dam abutments and alignment pins; control monuments; borehole piezometers; inclinometers; load cells (rock anchors); reinforcing steel strain gages (caissons); automated data loggers; and associated cables/conduits. This work is considered specialized requiring certification of Contractors and subcontractors qualifications and experience. Caisson construction, Rock anchors and instrumentation shall only be performed by contractors/subcontractors specializing in this work.
