Solicitation release date December 24, 1997 Proposals due February 24,
1998 The NRA will be posted in full on the release date of December
24, 1997. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
announces the solicitation for proposals for scientific studies focused
on developing an understanding of aerosol radiative forcing of climate.
Proposals are sought leading to quantitative assessment of radiative
forcing caused by atmospheric aerosols during the 20 year period of
satellite observations. Atmospheric aerosols, or fine particles, appear
to play an important role in global climate change. Natural variations
of aerosols are recognized as a significant climate forcing, that is,
a factor that alters the planetary radiation balance and thus may
cause a global temperature change. In addition, there are several ways
in which human activities are altering the amount and geographic
distribution of atmospheric aerosols, and thus possibly affecting
climate. This NRA is concerned with the climate forcing due to changing
aerosol concentration and properties, both the direct radiative forcing
by aerosols and the indirect radiative forcing caused by effects of
changing aerosols on cloud properties. The principal investigators of
these studies will be invited to participate on a science team to
coordinate their research plans, share information and guide
development of an aerosol climatology. Participation in this NRA is
open to all institutions eligible to receive support from NASA. This
solicitation will be available electronically on the release date via
the Internet at the Mission to Planet Earth Home Page:
"http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/mtpe/" under "MTPE Research
Announcements" or via anonymous ftp at: ftp.hq.nasa.gov/pub/mtpe. Paper
copies of the announcement will be available to those who do not have
access to Internet by calling (202) 358-3552and leaving a voice-mail
message. Please leave your full name and address, including zip code,
and your telephone number, including area code. This announcement will
be open for the period from December 24, 1997, through February 24,
1998, and proposals may be submitted to NASA at any time throughout
that period. Letters of intent are requested to be submitted before
January 23, 1998. (0337) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0003 19971205\A-0003.SOL)
