U.S. Department of Energy Albuquerque Operations Office Burns & Roe Enterprises, Inc. 2237 Trinity Drive Bldg. 2 3rd F_ I$CBD-8-2 Los Alamos NM 87544

99 -- FABRICATION OF FOUR 700 MHZ, MEDIUM-BETA (OPTION 1) AND SIX HIGH-BETA (OPTION 2) 5-CELL SUPERCONDUCTING RADIO FREQUENCY (RF) CAVITIES FROM HIGH PURITY (RRR GRADE 250) NB SHEETS OF THICKNESS 4 MM BY DEEP DRAWING OR SPINNING MACHINING, AND ELECTRON BEAM (EB) WELDING. DUE 013198 POC Point of Contact: Frank Targhetta 505-661-4425. Contracting Officer: . This procurement is in support of the U. S. Department of Energy's Accelerator Production of Tritium (APT) Project. The objective is to demonstrate the technology and provide the basis for the design of Superconducting RF (SCRF) cavities and cryomodules for the High Energy (HE) proton linear accelerator (linac). The HE linac will accelerate a 100 mA proton beam to an energy of 1.7 GeV in SCRF cavities fabricated from high purity Niobium (Nb). If APT construction is approved, the HE linac will require 402 cavities of two configurations. This request for source identification is for Option 1 with the possibility of awarding Option 2 at a later date. Option 1: Fabricate four Nb medium-beta (beta = 0.64), 5-cell SCRF cavities. Option 2: Fabricate six Nb high-beta (beta = 0.82), 5-cell SCRF cavities. At the operating temperature of 2 K, the cavity shall reach the accelerating gradient Eacc shall be greater or equal to 6.5 MV/m and an unloaded Quality factor Q greater or equal to 5 times 10E+9. The contractor is required to: 1. Provide all necessary materials, except for the Nb material, which is furnished by the Purchaser. Provide or have access to necessary engineering, facilities and tooling fixtures, including an electron beam (EB) welding apparatus capable of handling structures 19 inch in diameter and 48 inch in length. Buildings, chemical treatment facilities, and testing devices for RF measurements, shall be the responsibility of the contractor. 2. Have corporate and personnel experience in forming, machining, and EB welding of high purity Nb. Respondent will be required to submit resumes of critical personnel, demonstrating this expertise with SCRF cavities. 3. Have demonstrated adherence to strict QA Program per ISO 9002/ANSI Q9002 (or equivalent) standards through all phases of the manufacturing process. This procurement for cavities is open to commercial suppliers worldwide. It is currently anticipated that construction of the APT will necessitate the purchase of 108 cryomodules as complete assemblies. It is the intent of the Purchaser to give preference for that contract to firms who will make a substantial or total portion of the cryomodule fabrication in the USA. Provide your written response no later than January 31, 1998, to Frank Targhetta at the address listed herein. (0357)
