Elaine Cartwright, Project Manager, 415.544-0735 Light Rail Vehicles The San Francisco Municipal Railway (MUNI) is replacing its light rail vehicle (LRV) fleet to meet current and projected service requirements. MUNI's fleet plan calls for complete replacement of the existing 136 vehicle fleet by the year 2000. MUNI is currently procuring 77 LRVs from Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie of Pistola, Italy. The Breda vehicles were designed, manufactured, and tested between 1992 and 1996 in accordance with MUNIs 1992 conformed contract specification and all modification, to meet San Francisco's stringent performance requirements. MUNI now requires additional vehicles meeting the same rigorous specifications, and compatible in all respects with with the 77 Breda vehicle and the MUNI system. This includes physical dimensions, dynamic envelope, performance parameters, maintenance requirements facilities integration, sources of supply, and trainline operation. The vehicles shall incorporate AC propulsion, movable steps for street level and high platform operation, and HVAC, and shall be compliant with the American Disabilities Act. Specific emphasis will be placed on minimizing airborne noise and ground-borne vibration. The contractor shall be responsible for ensuring the vehicles are integrated with MUNI's Advanced Train Control System (ATCS) being supplied by Alcatel, and perform to the same criteria as the Breda vehicles under ATCS control. Any firm desiring consideration must fully demonstrate their ability to design a responsive LRV or adapt an existing design, build and demonstrate two (2) prototype vehicles, and begin delivery within 12 months of award. New or adapted designs will be subject to detailed MUNI review and approval, subsystem testing, and verification of ATCS operational compatibility. Suppliers of new or adapted designs must also provide complete drawings, required certifications, test documentation, vehicle histories, training; special tools; operating, and maintenance manuals; and warranty support. Firms with serious intent to supply 59 additional LRVs must first obtain a copy of MUNI's 1992 conformed contract specification and all modifications, and shall notify MUNI of their intent in writing no later than January 30, 1998.
