NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center intends to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) on a sole-source basis and in accordance with 10U.S.C. 2304 (c) (1) -Only One Responsible Source, to Hughes STX Corporation for a 2 month extension and four 1 month options to extend Contract NAS5-97059. This 2 month extension will provide services in support of the operations of the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) which is responsible for the acquisition, ingestion, management, and dissemination of NASA's mission data and related information. The Contractor is responsible for developing, maintaining, evolving, and operating sophisticated computer data, and information systems. A competitive follow-on to this effort is in process and is anticipated to be awarded in the near future, however, this action is needed to maintain the management and accessibility of NASA's data to both NASA's space scientists and the general public. HUGHES STX has maintained the management and accessibility of the NSSDC for the pastseven years. This experience and knowledge is essential to support the NSSDC until the follow-on contract is awarded. All responsible sources desiring consideration are requested to fully identify their interest and capabilities within fifteen (15) days of the publication of this synopsis to the GSFC Procurement Office, Code 216. See Note 22. The Government does not intend to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. See Note 26.
