and Alcoholism (NIAAA) intends to negotiate a one year contract (with
an Option year) with Wayne State University in Detroit, MI entitled
"The Role of Nutrition in the Essential Fatty Acid Status of Pregnant
Women whose Fetuses are at Risk for Alcohol-Related Birth Defects." The
purpose of this contract is to assist the Laboratory of Membrane
Biochemistry and Biophysics, NIAAA in examining the effect of alcohol
use during pregnancy on fatty acid composition and metabolism in the
neonate. The specific aims include the study of the effect of alcohol
abuse during pregnancy on normal essential fatty acid accumulation in
the mother and neonate, and investigation of the mechanisms underlying
this effect, i.e., determining whether changes in the levels of
essential fatty acids are due to alterations in diets, decreased
production, and/or increased catabolism. Authority: 41 U.S.C.
253(c)(1), as set forth in FAR 6.302-1; Wayne State University is the
only responsible source having an existing clinical research program
that is currently studying a suitable large population composed
primarily of pregnant African-American women. Inquiries must be sent in

may submit a proposal which, if timely, will be considered by the
