The Oil Spill Recovery Institute is accepting applications for small grants in predictive ecology. OSRI is committed to funding programs that focus on the biological resources at risk to oil spills along major, marine transportation routes for oil in the Arctic and subarctic region. The following topics are of general interest to OSRI; however, the actual topics of grant awards will be responsive to submitted proposals. (1) Food Web Toxicology -- a program to study the transfer of oil contamination through the food web. One specific area of interest is the role of zooplankton in the transfer oftoxins to higher trophic levels. (2) Time-Scales of Chronic Oil Toxicity -- a program to study time-scales of chronic oil toxicity. The EVOS event was followed by numerous investigations on the long-term toxicity of oil. There are opportunities for researchers with long-term programs to argue for the continuation of their studies on the basis of merit. (3) Oil Impact Prediction -- a program that improves the prediction of natural change in animal populations which is a prerequisite to the determination of oil spill impact and restoration activities. (4) Oil Impact Monitoring -- a program that improves the ability to monitor biological changes in the environment that are necessary input to numerical models that predict animal population change. Up to four grants will be awarded with individual amounts not to exceed $100,000. The duration of the grants will be for one year with an option to renew. Application Process Interested individuals or organizations must submit an OSRI grant application package. This application may be obtained as a downloadable file from the OSRI homepage (http://www.pwssc.gen.ak.us/osri/osri.html). As part of the application package, submit a detailed project description of 3-5 pages including summary, objectives, methods and a timeline. Attach the applicant's curriculum vitae and a budget showing total project cost and the amount requested as an OSRI grant. The curriculum vitae must include the applicant's educational background, work experience, awards received and a complete list of publications. Applicants must also submit the names of three peer reviewers. The original and three copies of proposals, including the copy bearing the signed cover page, should be mailed directly to: Dr. Gary Thomas, Director Prince William Sound Oil Spill Recovery Institute P.O. Box 705 Cordova, AK 99574 Awards Proposals, due by February 6, 1998 will be evaluated by the Staff and/or peer reviewed by a committee appointed by the OSRI and the disposition communicated to applicants by April 15, 1998. The awards will be made as soon as contract negotiations allow with individual awards up to $100,000 per year. The initial awards will be for one year with an option to renew; continued support will depend on successful completion of the proposed project and final report, preparation of a manuscript for submission to a peer reviewed journal and pending the availability of funds. Awards made as a result of this competition will be administered in accordance with the terms and conditions of OSRI Grant Policy Manual. (0009)
