Montana has available a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the bench-scale
demonstration of innovative remediation technologies for treating
contaminated water existing in the Berkeley Pit located in Butte,
Montana. The Berkeley Pit is an inactive open-pit copper mine that
currently contains over 25 billion gallons of heavy metal-laden, acidic
mine water. This RFP will be Phase 3 of the Berkeley Pit Innovative
Technologies (BPIT) Project, which is implemented by MSE-Technology
Applications (MSE), Inc., and administered by the Mine Waste Technology
Program (MWTP) at Montana Tech. The BPIT Project was initiated to
provide a channel for existing acid mine water remediation technologies
to be demonstrated on Berkeley Pit water in bench-scale laboratory
tests. Bench-scale demonstrations can be performed at the Montana Tech
campus using Montana Tech facilities or at the Subcontractor's
facility. A report summarizing the process and results of each
bench-scale demonstration will be sent to EPA Region 8 Field Office,
the EPA National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Cincinnati, Ohio,
and the Department of Energy (DOE) Resource Recovery Project which is
also administered by MSE. Offers are not to exceed $25,000. Successful
Offerors will be awarded fixed price subcontractors. Further details,
proposal format, and evaluation criteria are detailed in the RFP. This
RFP is open to all remediation technologies and business concerns. All
bio-remediation and electro-coagulation technology providers are
