The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a requirement for a laboratory size, co-rotating twin screw extruder. The extruder shall have the following processing capabilities: (1) downstream addition of powders, pellets, low bulk density materials and reactants; (2) reactive processing; and (3) changing process conditions during processing. In addition, the extruder shall possess the following: (1) 2-3 HP variable speed drive; (2) segmented barrel for processing flexibility; (3) sectioned screws for interchangeability between segments; (4) an L/D greater than 30; (5) vented barrel; (6) means of measuring melt temperature, torque, screw speed and barrel pressure; (7) clam shell barrel design for ease of cleaning and process monitoring; (8) option for updating to computer-controlled processing; (9) 0-5 volt analog output on all thermocouples, transducers, and screwspeed; and (10) feeder with deep flighted screw(s) for handling pellets.
