Smith, Contract Specialist, (404) 842-6787 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) contemplates awarding a contract to provide for the preparation of pooled-serum reference materials from freshly collected (not previously frozen) human serum for use in performance evaluation surveys and to package, store and distribute these samples to laboratories specified by the CDC and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in order to establish and maintain standardized measurement of total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL. Assayed reference serum materials shall be prepared by contractor and made available to participating laboratories according to specific schedules provided by the Government. The reliability of reference materials shall be assured through careful preparation of sterile pools of human serum which are dispensed and sealed in glass containers, frozen, and stored at -70 degrees centigrade to maintain stability. The contractor must have and maintain an active data base of suitable donors sufficient to satisfy the requirements of this project (an estimated 1,000 screened donors with characterized lipid profiles). The contractor shall assure homogeneity of all pools by analyzing a statistical sample of vials prepared.
