A -- QUICK FLIP MICROLOCATOR SOL CIT-98-102 POC Andrea R. Pistone, Civilian and Industrial Technology Programs, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Mail Stop C331, P.O. Box 1663, Los Alamos, NM 87545, Telephone: (505) 667-8718, FAX: (505) 667-0603, E-MAIL: apistone@lanl.gov. ~~~The University of California, which operates the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) under contract to the Department of Energy, solicits interest from companies wishing to license, develop, and market a new invention for positioning and micromachining millimeter-sized parts with submicron accuracy. This new device, referred to as either the "Reversible Micromachining Locator" or the "Quick-Flip Locator," can hold miniature parts (from 0 to several millimeters in diameter) securely in place while leaving both sides of the part accessible for machining, polishing, or inspection. Once the part is positioned in the mount, the whole part and mount assembly can be moved from one machine to another in seconds with no loss of accuracy. In contrast, the remounting and repositioning required by conventional methods often takes hours without ever achieving the precision offered by the Quick-Flip Locator. This reduction in set-up time makes micromachining with the new locator up to four times faster than with conventional processes. Among the many objects that can be machined or inspected with the Quick-Flip Locator are miniature optics, watch parts, printer heads, automotive injector parts, medical/surgical equipment, small motors, gear reduction units, and photomask lenses. One version of the new invention allows the positioning of two parts simultaneously for precise assembly. LANL is seeking industrial partners to commercialize this technology. A commercial, royalty-bearing license is the technology transfer mechanism necessary for the selected partner(s) to make, use, and sell this technology which LANL has applied to patent. Interested companies must possess existing capabilities in manufacturing, marketing, and support services in the domestic marketplace. These companies must respond with a formal statement of intent briefly describing their specific interest in this technology and how they foresee it being used (either internally, manufactured for sale, or both). Also include in the letter a descriptionof your company's technical expertise, manufacturing and marketing capabilities, anticipated financial resources available to transfer the technology, motivation for entering into a technology transfer agreement, and other relevant company information (annual report, corporate resume, etc.). This statement must be dated within 30 calendar days of this notice. (0027)
