The USDA Forest Service is looking for candidates interested in
completing an Environmental Assessment on the Milk Ranch Point
prescribed fire in the Manti-LaSal National Forest. The project is
located in San Juan County, Utah on the Monticello Ranger District. The
proposed project area is approx. 4,000 acres in size consisting
primarily of mountain brush species including serviceberry, gambel's
oak, pinyon juniper, and mahogany. Scattered ponderosa pine trees occur
on higher benches and patches of sagebrush/grasslands are scattered
throughout. Portions of the area were mechanically treated in the
1960's while others remain relatively undisturbed. The project area
contains an active cattle grazing allotment and serves as transitional
and winter range for deer and elk. The area faces basically south and
east and contains an abundance of archaeological resouces, which would
need to be analyzed for potential impacts from the proposed prescribed
fire. Candidates would need to work closely with experts in both
archaeology and fire to be able to predict potential impacts from fires
at various intensities. A research study may be desired for monitoring
results. It is anticipated that the work could begin late summer or
early fall. Solicitation package may be ordered by fax (801) 975-3478,
Attn: Nelda Montgomery, or in writing to the above address. Please
respond no later than February 18, 1998.***** (0034) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0045 19980205\F-0006.SOL)
