None, None. E-MAIL: None, None. The National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences intends to negotiate a contract with Howard University
College of Medicine, Washington D.C. to study the genetic
susceptibility to non-insulin dependent diabetes millitus in
African-Americans. This study will build on results of a one-year pilot
study conducted by Howard University scientists in collaboration with
scientists at the National Human Genome Research Institute. The
objectives are to continue to oversee and direct recruitment of
appropriate affected sib pairs of African decent for collaborative
genomic research through the recruitment centers in Nigeria and Ghana;
expand the already standardized protocols for collection of genetic,
clinical and epidemiological data on the study population; and refine
core facilities already established at Howard University for the
isolation; characterization and storage of cells and DNA for genomic
and biological studies. The work will be conducted through the
establishment of a coordinating center at Howard University. The Center
will receive all clinical epidemiological, biological data associated
with the contract ensuring the confidentiality of all records and
samples received and provide assurances the samples will not be used
for other purposes. The Center will prepare DNA, process samples for
genotyping and forward to NHGRI for analysis; and provide quality
control of samples and data received for recruitment centers. The
Center shall also direct and oversee the collaborative recruitment
centers which should together be able to identify a total of 400
affected sib pairs. The contract will be for three years with a planned
award date on or before September 1, 1998. It is anticipated that this
project will require approximately 16,848 man hours over the three
years. Authority: 41USC 253(c)(1), as set forth in FAR6.302-1 -- Only
One Responsible Source. Howard University is uniquely qualified to
perform this project. Howard University has conducted the pilot study
for this project and therefore has anestablished laboratory and data
base. Any other interested sources desiring consideration for this
requirement must fully identify their interests and capabilities to the
Contracting Officer listed above. See Numbered Notes 22 and 26. (0058) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0004 19980303\A-0004.SOL)
