COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 10,1998 PSA#2048DOT, Fed Hwy Admin, Office Of Acquisition Management, 400 7th St, SW,
Room 4410, Washington, DC 20590 A -- IMPROVED MATERIALS AND SYSTEMS FOR CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES SOL
DTFH61-98-R-00058 DUE 052598 POC Lise S. Lyles, Contract Specialist,
202-366-4229 The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plans to issue
a full and open solicitation. The scope of work consists of the
following: (1) Review the performance of existing cable-stayed bridges
worldwide and document their failure or success regarding corrosion
protection. (2) Fabricate and perform accelerated corrosion tests to
evaluate all available stay-cables with at least three major currently
used anchorage systems in simulated adverse environment on fully
stressed laboratory specimens. (3) Design of the fabricated specimens
shall be such that it permits the collection of some nondestructive
data during the evaluation period. Correlate the collected data with
visual observations and the condition of metallic components extracted
after autopsy of the specimen at the end of the evaluation period or
at failure whichever occurs first. (4) Evaluate the use of cementious
grout, petroleum wax and epoxies/polymers as encapsulants for the
protection of the main tension element in the exterior tube/pipe as
compared to the unfilled or absent tube/pipe in the Freyssinet system.
(5) Based on the above research, develop suggested recommendations for
incorporation into the Post-Tensioning Institute's "Recommendations for
Stay Cable Design, Testing and Installation." NOTE: Submit written
requests for copies of the solicitation to the address indicated above
and include two (2) self-addressed gummed labels. No telephone, fax or
