Announcement March 2, 1998 Title: Technology Coordinator, Oil Spill
Recovery Institute Summary Description: The Oil Spill Recovery
Institute (OSRI) was established through Congressional legislation as
a research entity focused on prevention and response to oil pollution
issues in the Arctic and Subarctic. Policies and program directions for
the OSRI are determined by a 14-member Advisory Board that includes a
combination of public, fishing and oil and gas industry, native and
state and federal representatives. The OSRI supports research and
education projects in three program areas: technology research and
development, predictive ecology and environmental monitoring, and
education. The Technology Coordinator will work with OSRI's Executive
Director to implement annual plans for programs approved by the OSRI
Advisory Board. Responsibilities: Develop requests for technology
proposals or Broad Area Announcements based on the OSRI Annual Work
plan priorities, and coordinate the proposal review process in
conjunction with the OSRI Director and OSRI's Scientific and Technical
Committee. Work with the OSRI Executive Director to develop and
maintain cooperative agreements with other organizations for research
and education programs, for example the Exxon Valdez Trustee Council,
Regional Citizens' Advisory Council, and Alaska Department of
Environmental Conservation. Coordinate the processing and contracting
for successful technology proposals. Monitor progress and final report
deadlines for these contracts. Periodically present technical papers
for OSRI at national and international workshops on oil pollution
related issues. Maintain files and a library on oil pollution issues
focused on the Arctic and Subarctic. Assist in planning future
technology research programs and work plans. Prepare technical reports
and journal articles on OSRI programs. Qualifications: Ph.D., Masters
or Bachelor's degree in science or engineering preferred. Experience
in research and good writing skills required. Good organization and
communication skills including use of the Internet required. Preference
given to those with degrees or experience in the chemical, mechanical
or civil engineering sciences and/or oil pollution related issues.
Candidates having general knowledge of Alaska and oil pollution issues
in the Arctic and Subarctic will be given preference. Salary:
Negotiable, dependent on experience. Job location and starting date:
Offices of the Oil Spill Recovery Institute are located at the Prince
William Sound Science Center in Cordova, Alaska. The Technology
Coordinator will primarily work in Cordova, although travel is required
to consult with members of the Scientific and Technical Committee and
other experts on oil pollution research issues. Starting date: As soon
