The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a requirement for renovations to be performed on the spent fuel storage pool and underwater fuel transfer canal located at the NIST facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The storage pool is used to store highly radioactive spent fuel and other radioactive components. It measures 10 ft. x 20 ft. and is 18 ft. deep. The walls and floor of the pool and fuel transfer canal are made of reinforced concrete. The pool is filled with approximately 30,000 gallons of clean, chloride-free water at approximately 55 degrees Fahrenheit with a pH level close to 7. The water contains small amounts of radioactivity mostly due to tritium. A SITE VISIT WILL BE SCHEDULED FOR ALL POTENTIAL OFFERORS. THE DETAILS WILL BE NOTED IN THE SOLICITATION. The Contractor performing this contract shall furnish the labor, material, equipment, and supervision necessary to accomplish the following: (1) remove and collect existing paint/coating from walls and floor of the pool andtransfer canal, and (2) prepare the surface and apply durable, high radiation resistant paint/coating/sealant or combination thereof to walls and floor of the pool and transfer canal. (Note: A durable, high radiation resistant liner may be used in lieu of the paint/coating/sealant.) Contract completion shall be within two years from date of award.
