Standards and Technology (NIST) has a requirement for a quantity of
seventeen (17), each, shim safety rods for the NIST research reactor.
Delivery shall be required within two (2) years of contract award at
the National Institute of Standards & Technology, Receiving Room,
Building 301, RT 270 and Quince Orchard, Road, Gaithersburg, MD
20899-0001. FOB is destination. A general description of the
requirement is as follows: 1 inch thick by 5 inches wide and have
active poison that is 52 1/4 inches long. The hollow interior is filled
with helium and sealed and the cadmium is clad on the outside and
inside surfaces with aluminum. The hub section of the rod is made of
aluminum plate. The 0.040 -- 0.060 inch thick cadmium is in sheet form
and is 99.95% pure. Exact thickness of the cadmium will be established
prior to fabrication. A number of specifications from the American
Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) will be incorporated within the
resulting solicitation and contract: ASTM B-440, AStandard
Specification for Cadmium@; ASTM B-221, AAluminum-Alloy Extruded Bars,
Rods, Shapes@; and ASTM B-209, AAluminum-Alloy Sheet and Plate@. The
general scope of these specifications can be found on the Internet at
Ahttp://www.astm.org@ (without quotes). Additional standards and NIST
drawings will be provided in the solicitation package along with
manufacturing procedures. The Government anticipates the award of a
firm-fixed price procurement. All responsible sources may submit a
proposal which will be considered by the agency. See Note 26. Please
