Basic research topics are sought in the areas of non-destructive evaluation, impact of corrosion on mechanical behavior, and structural integrity. In the area of non-destructive evaluation, innovative concepts are desired that will lead to great improvements in the NDE quantification and characterization of hidden corrosion, small cracks associated with WFD, and/or cracks in multi-layer structures. Integrated computational and experimental approaches that are based on service environment are sought for the corrosion-related studies and assessment of mechanical response. Issues in structural integrity include novel approaches in probabilistic fracture mechanics, time to onset of widespread fatigue damage, residual strength prediction and mechanics of bonded composite repairs to composite structures. This notice is a further defining of areas that are contained in AFOSR's Research Interest Brochure and Broad Agency Announcement BAA 98-1. AFOSR BAA 98-1 is available from the "Doing Business with AFOSR" section at http://www.afosr.af.mil. With the exception of cost, white papers will be evaluated using the criteria contained in the BAA. Full proposals will be evaluated using all criteria. White papers, not to exceed 5 pages, are due to AFOSR by May 1, 1998. Notification for formal proposal submission will be announced by May 15, 1998. The full proposals will be due by July 1,1998.
