The purpose of this amendment is to rescind the previous released PIC Information Package and replace it with a revised version. The Department of Defense has established the Personal Information Carrier (PIC) project to obtain, for military use, a means of storing and transporting electronic information. The PIC will consist of both a ruggedized portable device on which digital data could be stored, and an adapter for integration of the data storage device into a standard computer system using industry and government standard interfaces. Technical objectives of this project will include, but are not limited to: 1. Durable construction of the portable storage device to withstand use in military environments (e.g., waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, shearproof, unbrakeable, tamper proof, able to be decontaminated, etc.). 2. The device should be small enough for a soldier, sailor, marine, or airman to place upon his or her person. 3. Open systems, standards based architecture (e.g., JTA, DII/COE, ATA/IDE) to allow for unencumbered usage in multiple application environments. 4. Ability to secure data through authentication and encryption using recognized industry and government standards. Tentative Schedule: Information packages distributed to interested parties. A conference to answer questions and discuss information on the device will be held on 3 Apr 98. The intent is to solicit prototype systems that will be examined and may be destructively tested un-der loan agreements. Protoytpe delivery (up to five samples of each product) would be required NLT 5 May 98. (0082)
