SURVEY ONLY. THIS IS NOT A SOLICITATION FOR PROPOSALS OR INVITATION FOR
BIDS. The U.S Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command is conducting
a Market Survey to identify the companies that can provide an
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for the Abrams Main Battle Tank. The APU
will interface with existing tank subsystems to provide auxiliary
electric and hydraulic power during tank main engine off operations.
The APU must be capable of providing a minimum of 6 Kw of electric
power regulated to 28 volts DC and 1650 PSI hydraulic pressure at a
flow of 14.1 GPM. The APU must be capable of providing full electric
and hydraulic power to an altitude of 12,000 feet. Full electric power
is required to an altitude of 15,000 feet. To maintain full electric
output power to an altitude of 15,000 feet, the hydraulic output power
may be reduced. The operating temperature range of the APU is from
minus 25 degrees F to plus 125 degrees F without special adaptive kits.
The APU shall provide its own air filtration system which protects the
unit from exposure to 0.5 times zero visibility SAE coarse dust. After
12 hours of dust exposure, the APU shall provide full electric and
hydraulic power to an altitude of 6500 feet. The APU must draw its fuel
from the tank's fuel cell and have a maximum consumption rate of 5 GPH
of JP-8. The APU shall be capable of being controlled remotely.
Control functions shall include start, stop and emergency stop
functions. The APU shall support tank-integrated Built-In-Test
(BIT)/Fault Isolation Test (FIT) diagnostics. The APU shall meet its
performance requirements during and after 2500 hours of durability
testing. The APU, including mounting and interface hardware, shall be
installed in the tank sponson within a space claim 49 inches long, 21
inches wide, and 12 inches high. The sponson may be ventilated to
provide compartment cooling. If the sponson is ventilated, the exhaust
air shall use the same opening as the APU exhaust. The APU shall be
designed for ease of maintainability, i.e., access to air filter, oil
filter and fuel filter. The APU exhaust plume in the 3-5 micron band,
measured along a line perpendicular to the exhaust plume centerline at
a distance of 36 inches, shall not exceed 75 degrees Centigrade under
any engine load condition. The Government will review all submitted
statement of capabilities to determine market availability of the
required item. Submit information no later than 30 days after date of
