@losangeles.af.mil. The Air Force is seeking ways to augment current
GPS service with improved satellite navigation signals for civil and
military users. To this end, the Air Force is interested in concepts
that define candidate system architectures for GPS augmentation. The
concepts may include use of commercial and modified commercial space
assets, as well as current GPS satellites. The proposed solutions will
be considered in the current GPS Modernization decision process. We
are looking for descriptions of augmentation concepts to satisfy
current and anticipated radio-navigation deficiencies and required
civil and military capabilities over and above the current GPS service,
baselined at 21 satellites. As this is a short-notice RFI, the
information required is conceptual. We are seeking concepts to satisfy
critical civil needs for precision navigation and precision
exploitation including the world-wide civil-aviation precision-approach
Category I service with the 6-second signal integrity message and
synchronized time service coordinated with the current GPS reference
time maintained at the master control station. The space augmentation
concepts must be cost-effective, quick to IOC in 2002 to 2005,
compatible with the existing GPS signal structure, and capable of
providing at least three civil signals in L-band (the current L1 and
L2, plus an additional signal). Concept papers should include
descriptions of functional or performance needs being met or addressed,
candidate systems and architectures, operational concepts, critical
technologies, feasible business arrangements, proposed operational
dates, and rough-order-of-magnitude price. Concept description papers
should be submitted NLT 30 Apr 98. This call is open to all
space-related companies interested in providing this type of capability
or service. The GPS Joint Program Office
(http://www.laafb.af.mil/SMC/CZ/homepage/) and US Coast Guard
(http://www.navcen.uscg.mil/gps/) web sites contain a wealth of GPS
background information. All submitted concept descriptions will be
reviewed by a small Air Force team from SMC, AFSPC, and Aerospace
Corporation . This call is for information purposes only. The
government does not intend to award any contracts based on this action
or to pay any costs associated with this information. Proprietary
information will be protected accordingly. The Action Officer is Maj
