COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF APRIL 14,1998 PSA#2073SP -- DIGITAL ARCHIVE DIRECTIONS WORKSHOP -- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION The
explosive growth of information in digital forms poses a severe
challenge to both traditional archives and their information providers,
and many national and international organizations in the government,
commercial and non-profit sectors. These organizations are finding that
they need to co-opt information preservation functions normally
associated with traditional archives, because digital information is so
easily lost or corrupted. Necessary to creating solutions to this
environment is a reference model that creates a common understanding of
digital archiving environments and standards that apply to these
environments. A reference model exists. The reference model identifies
six functional areas within an Open Archival Information System:
Ingest, Storage, Data Management, Administration, Access, and
Dissemination. It is important to start now to develop relevant
standards in this area. National and international organizations,
including the International Organization for Standardization,
Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems, Johns Hopkins Applied
Physics Laboratory, Committee on Earth Observation Satellites, National
Aeronautics and Space Administration, Research Libraries Group, and the
National Archives and Records Administration are sponsoring the Digital
Archives Directions Workshop to identify potential digital archive
standardization topics. This workshop is to be held at the National
Archives in College Park, Maryland from June 22 through June 26, 1998.
