requesting expressions of interest and capability from organizations
that are able to supply discharged nuclear fuel shipping casks, and
associated handling hardware. Each cask must be transportable by road
on a truck trailer, and/or by rail on a rail car. Casks must be able to
accommodate one or more canisters that each contains six fuel
assemblies. The canisters will have an outside diameter of
approximately 410 mm (16.2 in), a length of approximately 4000 mm
(157.5 in), and a maximum weight of approximately 1,470 kg (3,240 lb).
The canisters will have a maximum thermal output of 500 watts, and a
maximum beta-gamma contact dose equivalent of 1x10 (to the sixth power)
rem. To maintain criticality safety, the geometry of the cask fuel
canister support structures must be maintained. The maximum
acceleration loads imposed on the loaded fuel canister(s) must not
exceed 40 g's. The casks must meet IAEA Standards and Guidelines such
as IAEA ST-1, SS-6, SS-37 and other supporting documents. The Republic
of Kazakhstan will approve the cask for use within Kazakhstan. The
response to this request for sources sought should include capabilities
and experience over the past 10 years in design, fabrication, safety
analysis, and quality assurance of transportation systems for both
domestic and international operations. It should be two to four pages
in length plus any related preprinted information. Organizations that
do not respond to this request for soures sought will still be eligible
to respond to a future solicitation. Companies may submit questions
regarding this sources sought notice on or before May 1, 1998 to Sandra

will be published on the DOE OAK Home Page at http://www.oak.doe.gov
(OAK Procurement) on or about May 7, 1998. Expressions of interest and
capabilities should consist of 4 copies, original and three
