Service (NPS), Grand Canyon National Park, will implement a visitor
transporation system for the South Rim of the Grand Canyon through a
consessions contract. The successful Concessioner/Contractor will
finance, design, build,operate and maintain (DBOM) light-rail and bus
transit service and receive a fee from each Park Visitor over the term
of the contract. Tour Bus service for fee will also be included in the
contract. the light rail service will transport visitors between a
transportation center near the community of Tusayan Arizona, and two
locations in the Park; Mather Point and Maswick Lodge. It is planned
that the light-rail service will operate year-round and will carry 4200
passengers per hour in peak periods. The rail system will require
approximately 9 miles of double track. The transit bus service will
operate within the Park year-round on several fixed routes. The NPS
will supply the Contractor with all existing Grand Canyon transit
vehicles. The Contractor shall supplement the existing fleet with
additional vehicles as necessary. The tour bus service will provide
exclusive guided tours within the Park. It is estimated that the tour
bus fleet will require thirty 40' buses. All vehicles, both rail and
bus, shall be low-floor design, fueled with natural gas designed to
minimize noise and exhaust emissions. The selected contractor shall be
responsible for financing, designing, and constructing the majority of
the necessary infrastructure for the light-rail and bus operations.
This shall include but is not limited to track infrastructure,
stations, signal systems, maintenance facilities, and access roads. NPS
will retain ownership and will retire the Contractor's finalcial
interest in all fixed facilities and rail vehicles over the course of
a specified schedule. A Request for Quotations will be issued soon and
