E-MAIL: Harold G. Taulbee, harold.taulbee@ssc.nasa.gov. The NASA
Stennis Space Center seeks qualified companies for further development
and commercialization of a hand-held technology to detect plant stress
by determining chlorophyll content. When unfavorable growth conditions
result in plant physiological stress, leaf chlorophyll content
typically begins to decrease. Stennis' technology analyzes light
reflected from plants, which can be correlated to chlorophyll content
and, consequently, the level of plant stress. The instrument is small,
easy to use, low cost, adaptable, fast, accurate, and does not require
contact with the plant. The prototype has detected plant stress up to
16 days before any visual indications are present, and a patent
application has been filed. This technology could be used in
agriculture, precision farming, horticulture, and plant research. A
Technology Commercialization Briefing will be held at Stennis Space
Center (near New Orleans, Louisiana) on June 23, 1998, to provide
interested companies with detailed information on the technology and
the process that will be followed to establish partnership agreements
and/or licenses for commercialization. Companies interested in
receiving information on this technology and the June 23 briefing
should contact NASA Technology Applications Team, RTI, Mark D.
