COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 14,1998 PSA#2095NIST/ATP WORKSHOP ON INTELLIGENT AND DISTRIBUTED CAD NIST/ATP Workshop
on Intelligent and Distributed CAD July 9-10, 1998 National Institute
of Standards and Technology Gaithersburg, MD ABOUT THE ADVANCED
TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM The ATP is a unique partnership between government
and private industry to accelerate the development of high-risk
technologies that promise significant commercial payoffs and widespread
benefits for the U.S. economy. The ATP encourages a change in how
industry approaches R&D, providing a mechanism for industry to further
its technological reach and extend the envelope of what can be
achieved. The globalization of markets and the pace of technology
continue to drive private R&D to narrower, shorter term investments to
maximize returns to the company. Most private capital sources are
reluctant to invest in anything less than a "sure thing." In sharing
the relatively high development risks of technologies that potentially
enable a broad range of new commercial opportunities, possibly across
several industries, the ATP fosters projects with a high payoff for
the nation as a whole, in addition to strong corporate rates of return.
The ATP is designed to stimulate joint research ventures that link
small, medium and large companies with end users to solve a generic
problem common to all parties. OBJECTIVES This workshop is a second
industry workshop held at NIST with the objective of obtaining input
into a potential ATP focused program. The meeting is intended to bring
together members the CAD software industry as well as engineering
industry end users from various disciplines who currently use or could
potentially benefit from advances in technology for Intelligent and
Distributed CAD. The goal of the workshop is to validate and further
develop the intended scope of the program and to demonstrate commitment
by industry that will aid in justifying the allocation of funds for
such a program. An initial description of the intended scope of the
program can be found in the program synopsis, but this scope will be
revised or refinedbased on the input we receive. Industry input should
address the four criteria ATP uses to select focused programs:
evidence of good technical ideas, U.S. economic benefit, industry
commitment to technology development in this area, and the opportunity
for ATP funding to make a difference. Additional details regarding the
input that is sought can be found at the Intelligent and Distributed
CAD website <http://www.nist.gov/IDCAD/> ADMINISTRATIVE
INFORMATION LOCATION: The workshop will be held at the National
Institute of Standards and Technology, Administration Building (101),
Lecture Room B, Gaithersburg, Maryland. REGISTRATION: The registration
fee is $115 and includes conference materials, coffee breaks, lunches
and dinner on the evening of July 9th. Attendees can register online
or by filling out and mailing, emailing or faxing the registration form

who will be arriving by air at Baltimore-Washington International,
Ronald Reagan Washington National, or Dulles International Airports,
the hotel is accessible by using Super Shuttle at 1-800-258-3826.
Gaithersburg also is accessible by Metrorail from Washington National
Airport. Take the Yellow Line train marked "Mt. Vernon Square" to
"Gallery Place" and transfer to a Red Line train marked "Shady Grove"
to the Shady Grove station. The time from National to Gaithersburg is
about 55 minutes. Cabs are available from the Shady Grove metro to the
hotel. If you plan to drive, Gaithersburg is located about 25 miles
northwest of Washington, DC, via Interstate Rt. 270 North. To reach the
Courtyard by Marriott, take Exit 11, Rt. 124 East, Montgomery Village
Ave. At the third light, turn left onto Russell Avenue (fire station on
