E-MAIL: David Burns, jolliffe@pica.army.mil. The U.S. Army TACOM-ARDEC, Close Combat Armament Center, is seeking firms that are interested in participating in the development and establishment of a virtual factory environment. It is envisioned that a network of manufacturers will supply the manufacturing, metal parts, loading, assembling, and packing operations necessary to meet the government's production requirements. The initial test case will be the manufacture of Ammunition Related Metal Parts. The concept and process of the virtual factory will be designed such that it will be expandable to include all phases of weapons and ammunition manufacture. This study is currently limited to fielded items only. Typical metal parts in this test case include punches, dies, special machine tools, cartridge cases, bullet and case cups, lead bullets, bullet jackets, and projectile bodies. Manufacturing operations will include drawing, upsetting, case trimming, tapering, metal identification stamping, forging, thread cutting, turning, drilling, and heat-treating. The following annual production quantities are estimates based on recent historical data. These are provided to allow interested firms to determine the scale of effort required for this project: a. Small Caliber (5.56mm to .50 cal) 200 million rounds b. Cannon Caliber (20mm to 40mm) 6.2 million rounds c. Large Caliber (105mm to 155mm) .8 million rounds Interested parties should submit information indicating their capabilities and describing the types of processes they can perform.
