COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 28,1998 PSA#2104SELF-CONTAINED SMALL ARMS COMPUTERIZED FIRING FACILITY The U.S. Army
Research Laboratory has filed a provisional patent application
concerning technologies associated with a self-contained small arms
computerized firing facility capable of controlling in excess of
twenty-four pop-up e-type (or similar) sulhouettes at distances up to
2000 meters and collecting and time-tagging shot and hit data. The
system supports semi-automatic and fully-automatic weapons as well as
single and multiple target presentations. Acquired data includes time
of shot, time of hit, target range, target presentations, and total
shots and hits. The present invention is air operated, using a battery
powered electrical solenoid coil to open and close an air valve
thereby providing compressed air to an air cylinder causing a
silhouette of a human to be presented to, or removed from view of the
shooter. Using air as the primary source of power to raise and lower
the target reduces the power required at each target location. The
electrical hit detecting silhouette only detects metallic projectiles
as they pass through the silhouette. This eliminates false hits due to
rocks, and gravel striking the silhouette as projectiles impact near
the target. This technology is available for licensing by the public.
A patent licensing meeting will be held 15 July 1998 at Aberdeen
Proving Ground, MD. A non disclosure agreement must be executed by all
attendees. To register for this meeting, please go to
