Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Patuxent River, MD is seeking information
from potential sources regarding protective breathing devices for use
by aircraft passengers. The purpose of this survey is to ascertain the
state-of-the-art in protective breathing systems, as well as to
determine availability, order lead time, product capability, and cost.
This request is for INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY. The product must have
the following characteristics: (1) protection of the wearer's face,
eyes, and respiratory system from smoke and toxic fumes for a duration
of 15 minutes, (2) protection of the wearer from hypoxia for a
duration of 15 minutes, (3) weight of no more than 4 pounds, (4)
donning time of no more that 25 seconds, (5) service life of no less
than 5 years, (6) ability for wearer to use eyeglasses, and (7) visual
useable/unusable inspection criteria. Please provide the following in
your response: (1) description of the product, including physical
specifications, (2) product capabilities, (3) product cost and specific
cost for any pertinent options, (4) test results, (5) history of the
product, especially any previous military environments, and (6) lead
time ordering information. Interested firms are requested to submit

Written responses should be submitted by 26 June 1998 and reference
this synopsis number on both the mailing envelope as well as on all
enclosed documents. Companies responding to this request should
indicate if their product is considered commercial as defined in FAR
2.101(a), and if their firm is a small, small disadvantaged, 8(a), or
large business (SIC #3728). All technical questions should be addressed

models are encouraged. Proprietary information MUST be marked as such,
on a page-by-page basis. This announcement is NOT a Request For
Proposal nor does the Government intend to pay for any
information/items submitted in response to this synopsis or for any
costs incurred in the development of the information. Data, samples and
3-D models will not be returned. This synopsis does not commit the
