The USAF Academy's requirement is for low force nuts (LFNs) used to attach the cadet-buildt FalconSat satellite to the launch vehicle and to separate the satelite after the proper orbit has been achieved. LFN's are resettable devices that provide shockless release when a spring made of shape memory alloy is heated with a small electronic current. Need the advantage of low shock, resettability and elimination of explosive, pyrotechnic devices. Shockless release, 3000 lbs. Working load, 40 millisecond release time, 500 peak shock response spectrum, automatic reset, release from full preload 25+ times during testing, redundant shape memory actuators, synchronizable. This requirement cannot be detained for LFNs to be developed. If Market Research can not locate another capable source to satisfy the requirement the USAF Academy is considering a sole source acquisition for Low Force Nuts with Starsys Research in Boulder Colorado.
