Conservation for Hampton Drawing Room -- The formal parlour or drawing
room within Hampton Hall at Hampton National Historic Site received a
large suite of gilded objects in 1851-52 from the shop of Samson Cariss
in Baltimore. Ordered by John and Eliza Ridgely, the objects remained
in place until 1950, when they were removed and placed in substandard
storage conditions for many years. The objective of this project will
be to stabilize, clean and conserve this suite of ten gilded objects,
two additional pairs of gilded looking glasses and one pair of gilded
metal Egyptian-revival ggirandole mirrors, to return all to exhibition
in Hampton's drawing room. The objects are in varying conditions.
Condition statements for eight objects are attached to supplement your
on-site examination. The other six objects may be examined on site.
Insurance coverage for all objects during period of loan for
conservation, door-to-door, for the amount indicated in the final
contract (estimated at $150,000 if all objects were loaned at one time
-- which almost certainly will not occur.) Request for solicitation
must be in writing. No telephone requests will be honored. (215)
