Marianne P. LeBlanc It is the intent of the government to negotiate a
sole source contract with The Informatics Institute to provide a 2.5
day Introduction to Applied Medical Informatics symposium, on an annual
basis, which covers informatics and its implications for health care
services and health care organizations. The course will cover an
overview of the trends in personal computers, the clinical work
station, issues in data collection and standardization, relational
database management systems, risk adjustment and outcomes management,
profiling physicians' performance, telecommunication technology,
tele-medicine, the internet, information systems for managed care,
practice management system and computer-based patient records. Learning
objectives for this will include; definitions of the important acronyms
and terms in informatics and in the computer telecommunications
technology, including developments in both hardware and software, how
trends in technology are likely to affect health care, reducing costs
and improving care, the benefits and challenge of data standardization,
an overview of the concepts and the tools/systems for clinical decision
support, outcomes management and profiling physicians' performance,
prospects for telemedicine, the importance of the internet, the role of
information in helping organizations cope with managed care and issues
in establishing computer-based patient records. The class will be for
approximately 30 to 40 physicians in the VA New England Network. The
format will be lecture and demonstrations with time for questions and
answers. The contract will be negotiated for a base year and 3 option
year renewals. The solicitation will be issued on or about 6/26/98 with
