PATIENTS FOLLOWING OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES TO HIV-INFECTED BLOOD. SOL
98S166(N) DUE 073098 POC Lorenzo J. Falgiano, Contract Specialist,
(404) 842-6786 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
contemplates awarding a contract for collecting blood specimens from
health care workers and source patients following occupational
exposures to HIV-infected blood. The purpose of this study is to 1)
assess antiretroviral drug resistance of patients infected with human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who are source patients for percutaneous
injuries to health care workers (HCWs) to determine the impact that
resistance may have for the post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimen
recommended for the HCW in US Public Health Service (PHS) guidelines;
2) develop a greater understanding of the prevalence of factors in
source patients that may influence the risk of transmission of HIV,
including drug resistance and viral load; and 3) examine various
aspects of the immune response of HCWs who sustain percutaneous
injuries to HIV infected blood. The successful offeror will submit to
CDC, 10-20 specimens from source patients involved in occupational
percutaneous exposures to HIV-infected blood. Also, specimens from 6-8
health care workers involved in percutaneous exposures with a risk of
HIV transmission, and 2-3 health care workers (i.e., "controls")
involved in percutaneous exposures to blood from HIV negative source
patients collected at baseline and at specified times during
postexposure follow-up. The successful offeror will also be required to
provide HIV-infected and related data to accompany the required
specimens. The period of performance will be 12 months from the
contract award date with one (12) month option period. The schedule
issue date is approximately June 29, 1998. No telephone requests will
be accepted; only written requests for this solicitation will be
honored. Requests should cite RFP Number 98S166(N). (0162) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0018 19980615\B-0008.SOL)
