COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JUNE 16,1998 PSA#2117A SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT OF A COMBINET EPA/NARSTO WORKSHOP ON PARTICLE
MEASUREMENT ENTITLED "PM RESEARCH MEASUREMENT WORKSHOP FOR HEALTH,
EXPOSURE, AND ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCES" A Second Announcement of a Combined
EPA / NARSTO Workshop on Particle Measurement entitled "PM Research
Measurement Workshop for Health, Exposure, and Atmospheric Sciences"
The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Research and
Development, and the North American Research Strategy for Tropospheric
Ozone and Aerosols (NARSTO), a public/private partnership, are
co-sponsoring a Workshop on Particle Measurement Research Monitoring.
The Workshop, which is open to the public, will be held July 22 and 23,
1998 at the Omni Chapel Hill Hotel, 1 Europa Drive, Chapel Hill, NC
27514, phone 919-968-4900. This Hotel is approximately 30 minutes from
the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Although there will be no
registration fee charged for the Workshop, all prospective attendee's
are required to pre-register to obtain further information. A growing
body of research points to a linkage between atmospheric concentrations
of fine particles (those with diameters less than 2.5 micrometers),
exposure, and adverse human health effects. In response to this
research, the EPA, NARSTO, and others are planning a program of
detailed measurements of atmospheric particles in areas representative
of those where particles are expected to be potentially significant
health risks and therefore, pose representative control-strategy issues
facing those charged with implementing PM2.5 National Ambient Air
Quality Standards (NAAQS). This Workshop is being held to discuss the
views of the atmospheric, exposure, and health-effects scientific
communities regarding measurements at chemical speciation sites and
special-study "super sites." The discussions will focus on scientific
questions and issues, preferably in the form of testable hypotheses.
The location, duration, and kinds of measurements that are needed to
accomplish such research will also be discussed. The goal of this
Workshop is to identify research programs that characterize ambient
particulate matter and important co-pollutants in a way that optimizes
informationfor multiple disciplines, including source apportionment;
and modeling, health and exposure study; and risk assessment. Eight
weeks after the Workshop, a transcript and/or a summary of the
Workshop, will be made available through the Office of Air Quality
Planning and Standards (OAQPS) website
(http://www.epa.gov/ttn/amtic/amticpm.html). On May 19 a Steering
Committee meeting was held to plan the agenda and the salient issues
that will be discussed at the Workshop. A 292 page transcript of that
meeting is available through the OAQPS website
(http://www.epa.gov/ttn/amtic/amticpm.html). This Workshop is
Co-chaired by: Dr. Daniel Albritton, National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, Boulder, CO and Dr. Daniel Greenbaum, Health Effects
Institute, Cambridge, MA. In order for the EPA to assure that space is
available for your attendance please pre-register by June 19, 1998 or
for additional information about the Workshop, please contact: Ms. D.
