The U.S. Army has identified a need for a Lightweight Fragmentation Hand Grenade (LFHG) that lightens the Soldiers load, has improved lethality, and has a fuze that will survive a minimum of 10 years of storage. The LFHG shall not weigh more than 9 ounces and have a Probability of Incapacitation (Pi) of 0.8 (or greater) against standing personnel wearing current combat uniform, PASGT vest and helmet at a range of 5.0 meters from the point of burst. The grenade shall have a spherical /oval shape. The fuze shall mate with the grenade body to form an integral, environmentally sealed unit; have dual safeties and a simple method of activation; shall meet the true intent of MIL-STD-1911; shall be both smokeless and flashless when activated; and have an audible signature that is less than or equal to that of the M67 Fragmentation Hand grenade. The fuze safety devices shall not be able to be unintentionally activated. The fuze function delay time should be 6.0 +/- 0.25 seconds. The minimum safety radius (Pi = 0) shall be 30 meters at 0.99 level of confidence. The grenade shall be waterproof to a depth of one meter for ten minutes (12 hours desired) and maintenance free during the entire storage cycle. The storage shelf (service) life shall be not less than ten years at Depot level and not less than two years of field storage under all climatic conditions. The grenade shall have a minimum reliability of 0.98 at initial delivery and 0.95 at the end of the storage life. The grenade shall be capable of being stored (without degradation), decontaminated in a field environment, transportable and operable under hot, basic, and cold climate conditions as specified in AR 70-38. Interested parties must submit information including pictures, illustrations and descriptions of the characteristics and capabilities of their product. This Request for Information is for planning purposes and should not be construed as a Request for Proposal. It is requested that all responses to this market survey be received by the government no later than 17 July 98. (0168)
