COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JUNE 25,1998 PSA#2124REQUEST FOR INFORMATION; POTENTIAL EPIDEMIOLOGY STUDY ON
HEMOCHROMATOSIS. For planning purposes for a potential future
epidemiology study on hemochromatosis, the National Heart, Lung, and
Blood Institute requests information from primary health care
providers/health maintenance organizations. Interested organizations
with patient/participant populations of 100,000 or more adults aged 25
or older are asked to submit the following information: 1. Total
numbers of patients, and numbers stratified by gender, race/ethnicity
and 10 year age groups, receiving routine blood draws for health
screening purposes such as cholesterol monitoring; 2. Inventory of
clinical assessments and laboratory assays included during these
screens; 3) Direct and total costs for performing transferrin
saturation and serum ferritin assays; 4. Direct and total costs,
including percent effort, for a research assistant to administer
informed consent and a 20 minute questionnaire in conjunction with
routine blood draw; 5. Estimate of numbers of patients over age 25 by
race/ethnicity likely to agree to addition of transferrin saturations
to their routine screening as part of a research protocol during a two
year recruitment period. Please provide the requested information
within ten (10) days after the date this notice is published. Responses
