E-MAIL: Gregory J. Williams, gwilliam@hq.nasa.gov. The National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) intends to release an
Announcement of Opportunity (AO) for Earth-observing science
investigations, to be named Triana, on or about July 10, 1998. The
primary objective of the AO is to use the unique vantage point offered
by the Sun-Earth L1 point, one million miles (about one and one half
million kilometers) from Earth, for Earth remote sensing science
investigations. The minimum science mission will provide images of the
full disk of the Earth in near real time. The selected Principal
Investigator will be responsible for implementation of the full
mission. As a secondary educational objective, we envision engagement
of high school and university students in all phases of the mission,
from design through operations and data analysis. After appropriate
science data processing, images from the satellite would be available
through an Internet World Wide Web site to be maintained and updated by
the educational community. The desired schedule for thismission is for
a launch by the end of calendar year 2000. The AO will be available
electronically via the Internet at the Earth Science Enterprise home
page at http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/ese/ under the "ESE Research
Announcements" section or via anonymous ftp at
ftp://ftp.hq.nasa.gov/office/ese. A paper copy of the Triana AO can be
made available to those who do not have access to the Internet by
calling (202) 358-3552 and leaving a voice mail message. Please leave
your full name and address, including zip code, and your telephone
number, including area code. This solicitation is open to all
categories of organizations including educational institutions,
industry, nonprofit institutions, NASA Field Centers, Federally-Funded
Research and Development Centers, and other governmental agencies, as
well as foreign research institutions. Participation by and
partnership with educational institutions is especially encouraged
given the student participation goals of the program. A subsequent NASA
Research Announcement will be issued soliciting proposals for
educational products and services using Triana images and data.
Proposals will be due 45 days from the release of the AO. > Posted
